RESUMO

Tannic acid (TA) aided hydrothermal treatment (HT) can decrease effective HT temperatures for sludge deep dewatering by chelator protein, but faces notable and economic challenges including the failure to remove antibiotics and the limited protein binding capacity. Herein, hydrothermally activated TA (in situ TA + HT) was conducted to simultaneously improve sludge dewaterability and antibiotic (tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), norfloxacin (NOR), ofloxacin (OFL)) removal. Compared to traditional HT and HT + TA treatment, the in-situ TA + HT process could further strengthen the TA-aided HT efficacy in enhancing sludge and reducing the protein content in the filtrate simultaneously; in which the optimal HT temperature for the dewatering of the sludge was reduced from 180 °C to 140 °C. Furthermore, the total removal efficiency of target antibiotics was achieved at more than 71.0-94.7% for TC and OTC, and 72.0-84.8% for NOR and OFL. The highly reactive species (·OH) generation and the electron transfer efficiency from the hydrothermal-activated TA process were responsible for the elimination of antibiotics and promoted the hydrolyzation and mineralization of HMW protein in sludge during the HT process. Meanwhile, the degradation of HMW proteins and the destruction of the secondary structure of these proteins resulted in improved hydrophobicity and dewaterability of sludge. Hydrothermally activated TA induces covalent binding with the protein. As a result, hydrothermal-activated TA could promote the removal of antibiotics and proteinaceous compounds from the sludge samples, improving the hydrophobicity of sludge and releasing bound water from the sludge flocs during HT. Finally, the cost of hydrothermal-activated TA was 66.51% lower than that of thermal drying treatment. This study not only proposed an effective method to improve traditional HT for sludge thermal dry-free treatment, but also provided new information on the catalysis roles of polyphenols in the hydrothermal conversion of sludge.

RESUMO

The addition of exogenous materials is a commonly reported method for promoting the anaerobic digestion (AD) of sludge. However, most exogenous materials are nano-sized and their use encounters problems relating to a need for continuous replenishment, uncontrollability and non-recyclability. Here, magnetic porous microspheres (MPMs), which can be controlled by magnetic forces, were prepared and used to enhance the methanogenesis of sludge. It was observed that the MPMs were spherical particles with diameters of approximately 100 µm and had a stable macroporous hybrid structure of magnetic cores and polymeric shells. Furthermore, the MPMs had good magnetic properties and a strong solid-liquid interfacial electron transfer ability, suggesting that MPMs are excellent carriers for methanogenic consortia. Experimental results showed that the addition of MPMs increased methane production and the proportion of methane in biogas from AD by 100.0 % and 21.2 %, respectively, indicating the MPMs notably enhanced the methanogenesis of sludge. Analyses of variations in key enzyme activities and electron transfer in sludge samples with and without MPMs in AD revealed that the MPMs significantly enhanced the activities of key enzymes involved in hydrolysis, acidification and methanation. This was achieved mainly by enhancing the extracellular electron transfer to strengthen the proton motive force on the cell membrane, which provides more energy generation for methanogenic metabolism. A careful examination of the variations in the morphology, pore structure and magnetism of the MPMs before and after AD revealed that the MPMs increased the prevalence of many highly active anaerobes, and that this did not weaken the magnetic performance. The microbial community structure and metatranscriptomic analysis further indicated that the acetotrophic methanogens (i.e., Methanosaeta) were mainly in a free state and that CO2-reducing methanogens (i.e., Methanolinea and Methanobacterium) mainly adhered to the MPMs. The above synergistic metabolism led to efficient methanogenesis, which indicates that the MPMs optimised the spatial ecological niche of methanogenic consortia. These findings provide an important reference for the development of magnetic porous materials promoting AD.

RESUMO

Inappropriate sterilization strategies inhibit microalgal growth when culturing microalgae with anaerobic digestate. This study aimed to scientifically select a low-cost disinfection pretreatment of anaerobic digestate for large-scale microalgae cultivations. In this work, three different methods, including autoclaving, ultraviolet or NaClO treatments, were employed to sterilize the municipal anaerobic digestate. Scenedesmus quadricauda was then cultured in diluted liquid digestate for the simultaneous lipid production and nutrient removal. The results indicated that the growth of S. quadricauda was inhibited after NaClO treatment due to the residual free chlorine. The 15-min ultraviolet effectively mitigated microbial contamination and increasing nutrient availability, enhancing the electron transport of microalgal photosynthesis. After 6-days cultivation, the microalgal biomass concentration of the ultraviolet group was 1.09 g/L, comparable to that of the autoclaving group (1.15 g/L). High nutrient removal efficiency was observed: COD (93.30 %), NH4+-N (92.56 %), TN (85.82 %) and TP (95.12 %). Moreover, S. quadricauda outcompeted the indigenous microorganisms, contributing to its dominance in the culture system of ultraviolet group. The facultative anaerobe Comamonadaceae and aerobes Moraxellaceae, rather than strict anaerobe Paludibacteraceae and Bacteroidetes_vadinHA17, played vital roles in synergistic removal of contaminants by bacteria and algae. The potential competition for nitrogen and phosphorus by bacteria contributed to the ultraviolet group having the greatest lipid content (48.19 %). Therefore, this work suggested using 15-min ultraviolet treatment for anaerobic digestate in large-scale microalgae cultivation.

RESUMO

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) receive large quantities of microplastics (MPs) from raw wastewater, but many MPs are trapped in the sludge. Land application of sludge is a significant source of MP pollution. Existing reviews have summarized the analysis methods of MPs in sludge and the effect of MPs on sludge treatments. However, MP aging and mitigation during sludge treatment processes are not fully reviewed. Treatment processes used to remove water, pathogenic microorganisms, and other pollutants in sewage sludge also cause surface changes and degradation in the sludge MPs, affecting the potential risk of MPs. This study integrates MP abundance and distribution in sludge and their aging and mitigation characteristics during sludge treatment processes. The abundance, composition, and distribution of sludge MPs vary significantly with WWTPs. Furthermore, MPs exhibit variable degrees of aging, including rough surfaces, enhanced adsorption potentials for pollutants, and increased leaching behavior. Various sludge treatment processes further intensify these aging characteristics. Some sludge treatments, such as hydrothermal treatment, have efficiently removed MPs from sewage sludge. It is crucial to understand the potential risk of MP aging in sludge and the degradation properties of the MP-derived products from MP degradation in-depth and develop novel MP mitigation strategies in sludge, such as combining hydrothermal treatment and biological processes.

RESUMO

Methanogenesis of waste biomass (WB) is a promising method for global sustainable development, reduction of pollution and carbon emission levels, and recovering bioenergy. Unlike in the methanogenesis of organic wastewater, in which microbial cells come into direct contact with the dissolved substrate, the 'solid-liquid-solid' modes in WB and between WB and microbial cells, which involve numerous solid-liquid interfaces, greatly hinder the methanogenesis efficiency of WB. Amongst all WB, waste activated sludge is the most complex, poorly biodegradable and representative. Herein, we highlight the role of water evaporation-driven solid-liquid interfacial restructuring of sludge in determining its methanogenesis efficiency. Non-free water evaporation increased surface roughness and adhesion, and compressed pore structure with numerous capillaries in sludge, resulting in a new solid-liquid interface of sludge with great capillary force and highly ordered interfacial water molecules, which provides an extremely favourable condition for high mass transfer and proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) in sludge. This restructuring was confirmed to induce the enhancement of solid-liquid interfacial noncovalent interactions and electron transfer efficiency in the subsequent methanogenesis process (P < 0.05), promoting the effective contact between the sludge substrate and microbial cells, thereby enriching the methanogenic consortia (i.e., Clostridia and Methanosarcina were increased by 290.0 % and 239.7 %, respectively) and improving the activities of key enzymes. Stable isotope tracing and metagenomic analysis further reveal that this restructuring promoted the participation of water molecules in the methane formation by PCET-driven release of protons from water, and enhanced main methanogenesis metabolic pathways, especially the metabolic pathway of CO2-reduction methanogenesis (+65.2 %), thereby resulting in a great advance in methane generation (+147 %, P < 0.001). The findings can provide a reference for regulating directional anaerobic biotransformation of water-rich multiphase complex substrates by interfacial restructuring inducement.

RESUMO

An annual production of about 500 million tons of household food waste (HFW) has been documented, resulting in significant implications for human health and the environment in the absence of appropriate treatment. The anaerobic fermentation of HFW in an open system offers the potential to recover high value-added products, lactic acid (LA), thereby simultaneously addressing waste treatment and enhancing resource recovery efficiency. Most of LA fermentation studies have been conducted under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions, with limited research on the production of LA through anaerobic fermentation under hyperthermophilic conditions. This study aimed to produce LA through anaerobic fermentation from HFW under hyperthermophilic conditions (70 ± 1 °C), while varying pH values (5.0 ± 0.1, 7.0 ± 0.1, and 9.0 ± 0.1), and compare the results with LA production under mesophilic (35 ± 1 °C) and thermophilic (52 ± 1 °C) conditions. The findings of this study indicated that the combination of hyperthermophilic conditions and a neutral pH (pH7_70) yielded the highest concentration of LA, measuring at 17.75 ± 1.51 g/L. The mechanism underlying the high yield of LA at 70 °C was elucidated through the combined analysis of organics dissolution, enzymes activities, and 16S rRNA microbiome sequencing.

RESUMO

High-solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD) reject water, distinguished by elevated levels of chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH4+-N and an imbalanced COD/TIN, presents a significant challenge for treatment through conventional partial nitritation/ anammox (PN/A) process. This study introduced a revised two-stage PN/A process, namely partial nitritation/denitritation-anammox (PN-DN/A) process. Its effectiveness was investigated through both pilot-scale (12 t/d) and full-scale (400 t/d) operations, showcasing stable operation with an impressive total removal rate of over 90 % for total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) and exceeding 60 % for COD. Notably, 30 % of TIN was eliminated through heterotrophic denitritation in partial nitritation-denitritation (PN-DN) stage, while approximately 55 % of TIN removal occurred in the anammox stage with anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) enrichment (Candidatus Kuenenia, 25.9 % and 26.6 % relative abundance for pilot and full scale). In the PN-DN stage, aerobic-anaerobic alternation promoted organics elimination (around 50 % COD) and balanced nitrogen species. Microbial and metagenomic analysis verified the coupling between autotrophic and heterotrophic denitritation and demonstrated that PN-DN stage acted as a protective buffer for anammox stage. This comprehensive study highlights the PN-DN/A process's efficacy in stably treating HSAD reject water.

RESUMO

Hydrothermal carbonization of waste activated sludge suffers from a low degree of carbonization caused by limited hydrolysis of carbohydrates and proteins, resulting in a high nitrogen content in hydrochar. Thus, it is hypothesized that thermal hydrolysis could destroy the stable floc structure of waste activated sludge, leading to higher degree of carbonization and high quality hydrochar with low nitrogen content by improving the solubilization and hydrolysis of organic matter. In the current study, thermal hydrolysis at 90 °C, 125 °C, and 155 °C was performed prior to hydrothermal carbonization to obtain low-nitrogen-content hydrochar. Thermal hydrolysis greatly improved the hydrolysis of sewage sludge. The nitrogen and sulfur content in hydrochars obtained after thermal hydrolysis decreased to 1.5-1.6 % from 1.7 %, and to 0.4 % from 0.5 %, respectively, depending on the hydrolysis conditions. Thermal decomposition stability of hydrochars obtained after thermal hydrolysis were also improved. Thermal hydrolysis at 90 °C and 125 °C promoted hydrolysis, dehydration, and the Diels-Alder reaction during hydrothermal carbonization, resulting in lower hydrochar yield but higher H/C and O/C atomic ratio. The Maillard reaction occurred during thermal hydrolysis at 155 °C, leading to the formation of large molecular refractory compounds that were retained in the hydrochar and increased the hydrochar yield. Furthermore, thermal hydrolysis can accelerate pyrolysis reaction of hydrochars, resulting in reduced energy consumption. The newly established thermal hydrolysis-hydrothermal carbonization process using sewage sludge as the feedstock has the potential to contribute to the development of the hydrothermal carbonization industry.

RESUMO

The development of efficient and low-consumption wastewater upgrading process is currently at the forefront of the wastewater treatment field. In this study, a novel wastewater treatment process based on powder carriers was proposed. Three systems, namely the activated sludge (AS) system, powder carrier (PC) system, and moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) system, were established and operated for over 140 days to treat real municipal wastewater. The characteristics and differences between the three systems were comprehensively investigated. The results suggested that the PC system exhibited notable advantages in nitrogen and phosphorus removal, especially under high influent load and low aeration conditions. The PC system, characterized by a higher nitrification rate compared to the MBBR system and a higher denitrification rate compared to the AS system, contributed to the stable nitrogen removal performance. The particle size of the zoogloea increased under the linkage of the powder carriers, and the mean size of micro-granules reached 170.88 µm. Large number of hydrophobic functional groups on sludge surface, coupled with increased protein content in EPS, further promoted sludge aggregation. Micro-granules formation improved settling performance and enhanced the abundance and activity of functional microbes. A significant enrichment in denitrifying bacteria and denitrifying phosphorus accumulating bacteria was observed in PC system. Up-regulation of the napA, narG, and nosZ genes was responsible for efficient nitrogen removal of the PC system. Moreover, a higher abundance in polyphosphate phosphotransferase (2.11 %) was found in PC system compared with AS and MBBR systems. The increase in the enzymes associated with poly-ß-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) synthesis metabolism in PC system provided the energy for denitrification and phosphorus removal processes.

RESUMO

Granular sludge has been recognized as an effective method for the application and industrialization of the anammox-based process due to its good biomass retention capacity and environmental tolerance. In this study, a one-stage autotrophic nitrogen removal (ANR) dual-partition system with airlift internal circulation was implemented for 320 days. A high nitrogen removal efficiency of 84.6% was obtained, while the nitrogen removal rate reached 1.28 g-N/L/d. ANR granular sludge dominated by Nitrosomonas and Candidatus Brocadia was successfully cultivated. Results showed that activity and abundance of functional flora first increased with granulation process, but eventually declined slightly when particle size exceeded the optimal range. Total anammox activity was observed to be significantly correlated with protein content (R2 = 0.9623) and nitrogen removal performance (R2 = 0.8796). Correlation network revealed that AnAOB had complex interactions with other bacteria, both synergy for nitrogen removal and competition for substrate. Changes in abundances of genes encoding the Carbohydrate Metabolism, Energy Metabolism, and Membrane Transport suggested energy production and material transfer were possibly blocked with further sludge granulation. Formation of ANR granular sludge promoted the interactions and metabolism of functional microorganisms, and the complex nitrogen metabolic pathways improved the performance stability. These results validated the feasibility of granule formation in the airlift dual-partition system and revealed the response of the ANR system to sludge granulation.

RESUMO

The biotransformation of food waste (FW) to bioenergy has attracted considerable research attention as a means to address the energy crisis and waste disposal problems. To this end, a promising technique is two-stage anaerobic digestion (TSAD), in which the FW is transformed to biohythane, a gaseous mixture of biomethane and biohydrogen. This review summarises the main characteristics of FW and describes the basic principle of TSAD. Moreover, the factors influencing the TSAD performance are identified, and an overview of the research status; economic aspects; and strategies such as pre-treatment, co-digestion, and regulation of microbial consortia to increase the biohythane yield from TSAD is provided. Additionally, the challenges and future considerations associated with the treatment of FW by TSAD are highlighted. This paper can provide valuable reference for the improvement and widespread implementation of TSAD-based FW treatment.

RESUMO

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising technique for sludge treatment and resource recovery. Metals are very important components of sludge and can have substantial effects on its complex nature and microbial activity. However, systematic reviews have not addressed how metals in sludge affect AD and how they can be regulated to improve AD. This paper comprehensively reviews the effects of metals on the AD of sludge from both abiotic and biotic perspectives. First, we introduce the contents and basic characteristics (e.g., chemical forms) of intrinsic metals in sewage sludge. Then, we summarise the main mechanism by which metals influence sludge properties and the methods for removing metals and thus improving AD. Next, we analyze the effects of both intrinsic and exogenous metals on the enzymes and microbial communities involved in anaerobic bioconversion, focusing on the types, critical concentrations and valence states of the metals. Finally, we propose ideas for future research on the roles of metals in the AD of sludge. In summary, this review systematically clarifies the roles of metals in the AD of sludge and provides a reference for improving AD by regulating these metals.

RESUMO

Based on the efficiency of the catalytic ozonation techniques (HDWS+O3 and MnFe2O4 @SBC+O3) in enhancing the sludge dewaterability, the effectiveness in synchronized abatement antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) was conducted to determine. The results revealed that catalytic ozonation conditioning altered the distribution of target antibiotics (tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), norfloxacin (NOR), ofloxacin (OFL)) in the dewatered filtrate, the dewatered sludge cake and the extra-microcolony/cellular polymers (EMPS/ECPS) layers, achieving the redistribution from solid-phase adsorption to liquid-phase dissolution. The total degradation rate was over 90% for TC and OTC, 72-78% for NOR and OFL; the abatement efficiency of eleven ARGs reached 1.47-3.01 log and 1.64-3.59 log, respectively, and more than four eARGs were eliminated. The effective abatement of the absolute abundance of Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) (0.91-1.89 log) demonstrated that catalytic ozonation conditioning could also significantly inhibit horizontal gene transfer (HGT). The abundance of resistant bacteria was greatly reduced and the signal transduction of the typical ARGs host bacteria was inhibited. The highly reactive oxidation species (ROS) generated were responsible for the abatement of antibiotics and ARGs. These findings provided new insights into the sludge conditioning for ideal and synchronized reduction in volume and hazardousness by catalytic ozonation processes in sludge treatment.

RESUMO

Biomass-derived carbonaceous materials with graphene/graphene-like structures (BGS) have attracted tremendous attention in the field of environmental remediation. The introduction of graphene/graphene-like structures into raw biochars can effectively improve their properties, such as electrical conductivity, surface functional groups, and catalytic activity. In 2021, the International Organization for Standardization defined graphene as a "single layer of carbon atoms with each atom bound to three neighbours in a honeycomb structure". Considering this definition, several studies have incorrectly referred to BGS (e.g., biomass-derived few-layer graphene or porous graphene-like nanosheets) as "graphene". The definitions and classifications of BGS and their applications in environmental remediation have not been assessed critically thus far. Comprehensive analysis and sufficient and robust evidence are highly desired to accurately determine the specific structures of BGS. In this perspective, we provide a systematic framework to define and classify the BGS. The state-of-the-art methods currently used to determine the structural properties of BGS are scrutinized. We then discuss the design and fabrication of BGS and how their distinctive features could improve the applicability of biomass-derived carbonaceous materials, particularly in environmental remediation. The environmental applications of these BGS are highlighted, and future research opportunities and needs are identified. The fundamental insights in this perspective provide critical guidance for the further development of BGS for a wide range of environmental applications.

RESUMO

The sustainable application of thermal sludge drying process is limited by the high energy consumption due to the phase-change latent heat of moisture. This study proposed that the ultrahigh pressure filtration could realize the non-phase-change sludge drying. The lowest water content of 28.12 wt.% was realized by the filtration pressure of 21 MPa for the excess sludge with polyaluminium chloride as the conditioning agent. With the stepwise increase of filtration pressure employed (5-21 MPa), the diameter of solid pores was gradually narrowed to the same order of magnitude with the thickness of vicinal water film (i.e., 1-10 nm). As a result, the capillary water was transformed into the vicinal water, and the solid-water interface interaction played more crucial roles in water occurrence states. However, Hagen-Poiseuille equation was introduced to estimate the pore water outflow based on the pore wall hydrophilicity and the external filtration pressure, which implied that there can be always a sufficiently large driving force to maintain the water outflow rate no matter how the pore diameter is small and the sidewall is hydrophilic. Typically, the fitting results of excess sludge (R2=0.985, p-value<0.01) indicated that the pressure gradient of 2.11 × 109 Pa/m was required to maintain the pore water flow rate of 1.38 × 10-15 m3/s with the median pore diameter of 5.33 × 10-7 m. All these findings broke through the conventional cognition that only thermal drying process can decrease the sludge water content below 60 wt.%, and facilitated energy saving of sludge dewatering process through non-phase-change separation, i.e., ultrahigh pressure filtration.

RESUMO

Owing to its profound pollution-inducing properties and resistance to biodegradation, saline organic wastewater (SOW) has unavoidably emerged as a predominant focal point within the wastewater treatment domain. Substantial quantities of SOW are discharged by diverse industries encompassing food processing, pharmaceuticals, leather manufacturing, petrochemicals, and textiles. Within this review, the inhibitory repercussions of elevated salinity upon biological water treatment systems are subject to methodical scrutiny spanning from sludge characteristics, microbial consortia to the physiological functionality of microorganisms have been investigated. This exposition elucidates the application of both anaerobic and aerobic biological technologies for SOW treatment, which noting that conventional bioreactors can effectually treat SOW through microbial adaptation, and elaborating that cultivation of salt-tolerant bacteria and the design of advanced bioreactors represents a promising avenue for SOW treatment. Furthermore, the mechanisms underpinning microbial acclimatization to hypersaline milieus and the methodologies aimed at amplifying the efficacy of biological SOW treatment are delved into, which point out that microorganism exhibit salt tolerance via extracellular polymeric substance accumulation or by facilitating the influx of osmolarity-regulating agents into the bacterial matrix. Finally, the projections for future inquiry are proffered, encompassing the proliferation and deployment of high salt-tolerant strains, as well as the development of techniques enhancing the salt tolerance of microflora engaged in wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Owing to the extremely complex compositions and origins of waste-activated sludge (WAS), the multiple physiochemical properties of WAS have impacts on its dewaterability, and there is a complex interaction relationship among the multiple physiochemical properties, which makes it difficult to identify the controlling factors on WAS dewaterability. Accordingly, there is still no unified certainty in the appropriate ranges of physiochemical properties for the optimal dewaterability of sludge from different sources, resulting in a lack of clear theoretical basis for technical selection and optimization of sludge dewatering processes. The large consumption of conditioning chemicals and low process efficiency stand for the major deficiency of existing sludge conditioning technologies. This study proposed to use a non-linear, adaptive and self-organizing artificial neural network (ANN) model to integrate the multiple physiochemical properties of WAS affecting its dewaterability, and WAS dewatering performance under certain conditioning schemes could be predicated by ANN model with the multiple physiochemical properties and conditioning operation parameters as the input arguments. Thus, the laborious filtration experiments for screening conditioning chemicals could be replaced by the input adjustment of ANN model. Rooted mean squared error (RMSE) of 6.51 and coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.73 confirmed the satisfied stability and accuracy of established ANN model. Furthermore, the predictor-exclusive method revealed that the exclusion of polar interface free energy decreased most, which reflected the importance of surface hydrophilicity reduction in sludge dewaterability improvement. All the contributions presented here were believed to provide an intelligent insight to improve the experience operation status of WAS dewatering process.

RESUMO

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microplastics (MPs) are recognized as emerging contaminants and threats to global human health. Despite both of them being significantly detected in their "hotspots", i.e., waste activated sludge (WAS), rare studies on how MPs affect ARGs and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in anaerobic sludge digestion are available. Herein, the fate of ARGs and ARB after exposure to MPs of three dosages (10, 30, and 80 particles/g-TS), three polymer types (LDPE, PET, and PS), and three branching extents (LDPE, LLDPE, and HDPE) in anaerobic sludge digestion was investigated. Metagenomic results indicated that all variants of MPs resulted in an increase of the relative abundance of ARGs in the digester compared to the control. The abundance of ARGs demonstrated a dosage-dependent relationship within the range from 10 to 80 particles/g-TS, resulting in an increase from 4.5 to 27.9% compared to the control. Branching structure and polymer type influence ARG level in the sludge digester as well. Mechanism studies revealed that LDPE selectively enriched potential ARB and ARGs in the surface biofilm, possibly creating a favorable environment for ARB proliferation and ARG exchange. Furthermore, vertical transfer of ARGs was facilitated by LDPE through increasing bacterial cell proliferation accompanied by the enhancement of relevant functional genes. The elevated abundance of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and ARGs-carrying plasmids also demonstrated that MGE-mediated horizontal transfer was promoted by LDPE at 80 particles/g-TS. This effect was compounded by increased oxidative stress, cell membrane permeability, and cell cohesion, collectively facilitating horizontal ARG transfer. Consequently, both vertical and horizontal transfer of ARGs could be concurrently promoted by LDPE an in anaerobic sludge digester.

RESUMO

Background: In a previous phase 3 clinical trial, we showed that an inactivated poliovirus vaccine derived from the Sabin strain (sIPV) can induce neutralising antibodies against currently circulating and reference wild poliovirus strains. However, the immune persistence of sIPV remains to be evaluated. Methods: In this study, 400 participants who were eligible for an early phase 3 clinical trial (Jan 1, 2012-Aug 31, 2014) in Pingle County, GuanXi Province, China, were initially involved in one site. Of the participants in the previous phase 3 clinical trial, sera of 287, 262, 237, and 207 participants were sampled at the ages of 4, 6, 8, and 10 years, respectively, after the prime-boost regimen. Neutralising antibodies against attenuated Sabin strains were detected using these serum samples to determine immune persistence. The serum neutralising antibodies titre of 1:8 against poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 is considered to be a seroprotection level for polio. The trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01510366. Findings: The protective rates against poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 in the sIPV group were all 100% at 10 years after the booster immunisation, compared with 98.1%, 100%, and 97.1%, respectively, in the wIPV control group after 10 years. After the booster at 18 months, the geometric mean titres (GMTs) of neutralising antibodies against poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 in the sIPV group were 13,265.6, 7856.7, and 6432.2, respectively, and the GMTs in the control group (inoculated with inactivated poliovirus vaccine derived from wild strain (wIPV)) were 3915.6, 2842.6, and 4982.7, respectively. With increasing time after booster immunisation, the GMTs of neutralising antibodies against poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 gradually decreased in both the sIPV and wIPV groups. At the age of ten years, the GMTs of neutralising antibodies against poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 in the sIPV group were 452.3, 392.8, and 347.5, respectively, and the GMTs in the wIPV group 108.5, 154.8, and 229.3, respectively, which were still at a higher-than-protective level (1:8). Interpretation: Both sIPV and wIPV maintained sufficiently high immune persistence against poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 for at least 10 years after booster immunisation. RESUMO

This study posed a novel biomimetic flocculation approach, aiming to efficiently harvest high-quality biomass of Scenedesmus quadricauda cultured with anaerobic digestate. Here, that poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) could serve as mimetic silicified proteins to spontaneously incorporate nanosilica onto microalgal cells, imparting diatom-like characteristics to S. quadricauda. Compared to the exponential growth phase (day 3), the highest harvesting efficiency (93.49%) was obtained at a lower dosage of PDADMAC (5 mg/g) in the stationary phase (day 6), which was attributed to changes in properties and composition of microalgal LB-EPS. On day 6, the hydrophobic functional groups in LB-EPS provided more binding sites during the flocculation process and formed a network structure of microalgal cells-flocculants-nanosilica. The resulting larger and more stable biomimetic silica shell promoted microalgal flocculation and sedimentation. Compared to conventional harvesting methods (centrifugation, polyacrylamide, alkaline flocculation), this method had the minimal negative impact on harvested biomass, with 9.95% of cell membranes damaged.
